Vacation and Spring Break and an iPad Hack

So this has been spring break and I have been really lazy. I have only done the cleaning that I HAVE to do and sometimes not even that. I have been reading lots of books, but on audio and dead tree variety. I finished all 5 of the Homecoming books by Orson Scott card in the last 2 weeks. I also read House Rules by Jodi Picoult which was excellent all the way through until the last chapter which left the whole book unsatisfying.

Vacation was fun. We went to the Big Island and drove all the way across the island (pretty drive) to go to the Kona Temple.

The vacation rental we shared with like 12 other people was huge and really quite nice although the owners put the ricketiest beds in it you ever did see. And seeing as how we were the last couple to show up, we got the worst bed of the lot. Both morning we woke up sore all over from it, and let me tell you, you don’t want to start a marathon sore.

The marathon went ok. As expected, Märia smoked me. I stayed with her for the first 10 miles and then she left me behind. Here is my run picture (oh yeah, it doesn’t say 26.2 miles… that is because I lost one of my early miles, somehow the iPod got paused and I didn’t realize it because I lost my earphones so I wasn’t listening to music.  I actually finished 1 minute short of 6 hours and I did the whole 26.2 miles):

So everyone should know that I lust after pretty Apple gadgets and since the iPad was announced I have been salivating over it.  But it is all kinds of expensive at $500 for the cheap one so I decided I had to do something about it.  About 6 months ago my little 10″ hackintosh netbook broke one of it’s hinges and it has been sitting in a close for a long time.  I couldn’t really use it except in very controlled environments, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away because it had served me very well for a year and a half and it actually still worked, just the hinge was broken.  So I decided to turn it into a Mac Tablet.

Yes, it is put together with electrical tape.  =)  I took the whole thing apart, component by component and then put it back together without the LCDs plastic backing, without the keyboard and the top plastic part  that framed the keyboard.  It took me about 5 hours (all in the middle of the night so little girls wouldn’t steal screws).  It is about the same size as an iPad, but about twice as heavy.  I added a touch screen so it is completely touch driven, and I have a bluetooth keyboard for those rare times that I want to do serious writing on it.  For every day chores I can use the built in touchscreen keyboard.  Here is a video of it in action:

  1. The netbook mac cost me $400 but that was 2 years ago now, 2 years in June. So nearly 2 years. The same netbook costs about $200 now. I spent $80 on the touchscreen which was shipped straight from Hong Kong and then I put it all together myself.
