The Princess and the Frog

Seporah and I went to go see The Princess and the Frog last night. For the most part I really loved the movie. The music was top notch jazzy Disney sing along songs. The supporting talking animal characters had just the right amount of depth and humor. The animation was beautifully hand drawn. The villain was scary and bad and eventually got his comeuppance. And the message was perfect: Hard work and determination along with balance in one’s life and the love and support of family and friends can help you achieve your dreams. *Tangent: The complete opposite of the awful Kung Fu Panda movie: I can be a lazy, fat, slob, but I’m still special enough I can have all my dreams placed in my lap without doing anything. We don’t own that movie.*

Really the main character Tiana was a GREAT heroine and role model. I really liked her. I would have loved for her to be my friend. I would love it my girls grew up to be like her. There was a couple scenes with her and her parents that were really touching, I found myself holding back some sniffles to see the love between her and her family.

However (you knew this was coming), this movie is about a black princess. I have no problem with a black princess, in fact if I were black I’d want my little black girls to have ONE Disney movie that had a princess that looked like them. But the way they portrayed white people was awful. There were 2 groups of white people. One a seriously idiotic hick family. The other a spoiled little airheaded blond brat and her fat cat father. I am sure this movie will be in just about every black family’s movie collection and will be loved. All I can think is great, they’re gonna think my little girls are spoiled and get everything their heart desires just because they ask for it. I mean where we live, we ARE the minority. We go to the park with 300 other people and we’re the only white ones. That in and of itself doesn’t worry me but the anti-white propaganda that gets shoved into children’s minds now a days does. I really don’t want Felicity coming home all beat up because she’s got the wrong skin color. That would just not be cool.

Anyways, we will buy the movie, I really loved it. But afterwards we’ll have to discuss what constitutes a good role model and what a REAL princess is like.
