The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance

I’m actually discussing a book to NOT recommend it. I picked up The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance by Elna Baker because it was a Modern Day Mormon Memoir. Interesting. I read a review on another blog (now that I’ve read the book, I realized she reviewed it quite poorly). For those of you who are not LDS (Mormon), take my word it is quite difficult to be a partway Mormon. It’s not like being Catholic where you can go twice a year and everyone’s ok with that. Being LDS is really a whole life religion. However, this memoir is about being partway Mormon. It’s not at all what I expected (I expected a coming of age learning how to live in this world but not being of it). No instead this woman straddled the line between her religion and the world the entire book, I assumed the ending would have her go one why or the other, but no the ending is her continuing to straddle the line. It was quite disappointing. Don’t read it.

I will have to say one thing the book made me realize. I am exceptionally glad I am not an overage single Mormon, that would be really annoying. So thanks Steven. I love you.

  1. It seems like your objections about her book are actually objections about her lifestyle.

  2. Actually no, there was no point. There was no grand “ahha” moment. There was no climax or growth. She ended in the pretty much the same point that she started (minus a few pounds and plus a few kisses). And what is the point of a memoir except to show some sort of growth.
