The Bus

This month there are 22 weekdays. In my mind that means there should be at least 20 school days. Am I right? Well any way you slice it there’s not. There’s only 14 public school days. 14?! And 9 of them are half days due to parent-teacher conferences. Which really isn’t an issue so much for Seporah, I mean she’s only in preschool. But the older kids are who I’m really worry about.

See the government has started implementing Furlough days to cut back on spending. And they decided to cut teacher’s salaries first. Hello? Let’s not take into account that Hawaii comes in dead last in the US’s public school systems. Let’s not take into account that EVERY Wednesday is already a half day. And really, it’s not a good idea to ask Steven about some of the students he goes to school with who came out of the public school system.

Like I said Seporah’s young enough it’s not really an issue, but the older kids are the ones who are really going to suffer. No ones seems to be talking about this though. You want to know what’s got everyone’s panties in a twist? “What are working parents going to do about daycare on those Furlough days?” You think I’m exaggerating, but unfortunately I’m not. I won’t comment on this, but you can imagine my irritation.

*Slight Tangent: Kids also have to PAY to ride the school bus. Seriously $75 a year. They were trying to pass a bill last month to up that to $200 a year, but it didn’t go through. Not so much an issue for a house with 1 child, but what about 4 or even more? We are exempt from paying due to the fact that she rides the “Short Bus.”*

Despite the obvious lack of concern for our children’s education, I do think Seporah’s class is going well. Maybe they put extra effort in Special Education Preschool. At least that’s what I keep on telling myself.

We do not have plans to stay here forever, hopefully when Steven has his Bachelor’s in 18 months the market will be better. And then the girl’s can go to a school system that’s not so jacked up.
