The only problem with his message is that money is not the root of all evil but “the love of money.” Kind of a big difference there! There is nothing wrong with money just the misuse of it out of greed.
Regardless of the accurate scriptural reference, they are both equally quoted by Christians. Money (property ownership, inequalities, etc) being the root of evil is actually far more quoted by socialists and communists, Francisco’s primary audience, and so I think the statement is best said as he said it.
That said, who is to define “misuse”? Remember Theodore Roosevelt said “We grudge no man a fortune in civil life if it is honorably obtained and well used.” He meant that he thought it was the government’s job to decide whether a man’s wealth was or was not properly used, and if it decided it was not being properly used, it could take it away. Is that the government you want to live under? I don’t think it the proper role of government.
Intelligent self-interest (greed – a word much maligned) is the motivator that has given us the incredible industrial and technological advances we have made over the last 200 years. It has lengthened our individual lifespans, and given us a far better standard of living. It is criminal that we speak so ill of greed.
