So after the Haiti earthquake I felt really, really sad. And I really wanted to do something. I thought well if I didn’t have a mortgage that I had to pay and children that needed tended to, I would take a plane and go work as a nurse for a couple weeks and do my part (I didn’t obviously because I’m sure you would have heard about it).

I am such a hypocrite:

Then if you’ll remember a couple of weeks ago there was another earthquake in Chile. I don’t know if everyone knows this, but they issued a tsunami warning here in Hawaii. I was working that night that the earthquake happened. I saw it on the news starting at 10:30PM and warnings concerning the potential tsunami ran for the next 8 hours until I got off at 6:15AM. Needless to say, I was really freaked out. The tsunami was scheduled to hit Hawaii sometime around 11AM. I was suppose to come in to work that night again. I told the charge nurse straight up, “Hey if this tsunami actually happens, I may not be in to work tonight.” The thought of leaving my children at a time they really needed me was not something I could picture. There was 4 nurses scheduled to work that day. One of them, who has 2 children at home, called out sick. I don’t think she was sick, I think she wanted to stay with her kids and in fact, I don’t blame her at all. The other 3 nurses did not hear anything about it until they got in to their cars on the drive to work. They walked in thoroughly worried about their children and dogs they had left at home and I can imagine they really didn’t want to be there either.

Thankfully the tsunami turned out to be ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. But it did get me thinking about what my responsibility as a nurse during a natural disaster is and how that completely clashes with my responsibilities as a mom. Because really if something like that actually happened, there could potentially be a huge number of seriously injured people and my skills would actually be critically needed. But on the other hand, how on earth do I let someone else take care of my children. When presented with the decision of which I would choose, I choose my kids hands down. But Lord, if my kids were injured I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to make the same decision I did.

It also got me thinking about how we called the fire fighters from 9/11 heroes and such. In my mind I would think, yes indeed they are, but they were just doing their job. Really though, they could have chosen not to it and how much worse off would that day have been or other days like it.

Some of you will have been here long enough to remember the page we had up 2+ years ago, before the switch over to Wordpress. When we moved over I didn’t add a page for submitting your stories, because Wordpress has the functionality built in and I expected those who used to submit news to create accounts and post on their own. I even recall writing a post specifically describing how to write posts on the new blog, but that was years ago and no one really took advantage of it and we lost a significant part of RushingAround – your news! So the “Submit News” link at the top of the page has returned! Submit the events of your life already, and I will make sure it shows up as it’s own post.

About three years ago, I was probably in the best shape of my life.. and really gave a crisp military appearance. One thing about my physique bothered me though. At the ripe age of 21.. I started to bald.. and my hair lost ground (is still losing ground) until I became very embarassed about it. I decided to save myself money on weekly hair cuts and started to buzz and bic my hair every week. For those of you who are unaware of what ‘bic’ ing your hair is.. you essentially shave your head like you shave your face. In a perfect world.. when you are done.. you look like Mr. Clean. For over a year I shaved my head but was never able to get that wax smooth head. I always had a major amount of stubble. This frustrated me immensely. All the Sgts in my unit shaved their heads, and they pulled it off without a flaw! I really wanted to ask for help, but I didn’t want to appear as if I didn’t know what I was doing.

Well.. while at walmart, I saw a man digging through a bin of the discount dvds. His head was FLAWLESS. The entire backside of it was as smooth as a cue ball. I thought to myself.. you know what?! I have NOTHING to lose by asking him what his technique is. The WORST thing he can say is, “No, I’m not going to tell you.”

So I took a deep breath.. walked over and tapped him on his shoulder. Even as he was turning I began, “Excuse me, sir. I’ve been in the military for 4 years already and I can not figure out people get their head that smooth! How do you get all the hair off? What’s the secret?”

He finishes turning… and promptly replies without any hesitation. “Cancer.” I then see the scar running across the front and top of his head, where evidently he had brain surgery or something. He nodded, turn back around and goes back to selecting his movie for the night.

True Story.

Ok, my mom was evil and has had a regular blog (more regular than I, about as regular as Märia) for 3 months. It is mostly about the quilts she makes with some commentary on her life, similar to what you get here about us. The quilts are really beautiful and she makes them all for charity. Go check them and her out at: missdebs .

Also, Russell (Märia’s brother) and his wife asked me to host a blog for them and they are set up over at AlbrightCentral.com . They will blog about their lives and their infant, the newest Märia.

Lastly, don’t forget about NormanRushing.com . Only 1 book has sold, which I think is a bit of a disappointment. But such is life. =)

Okies, so I have officially been out of the active military for a year now, really 13 months, as I actually left in mid February with several weeks of terminal leave. I left active military service at roughly 235 lbs, and topped out my weight maybe a month ago at 276 lbs. Today I weighed 261. Märia has been on my case ever since I did my physical and came out with high blood pressure. So yeah, a year without any significant running can do a doosy on the body. In the 12 months prior to the last 3 weeks I ran the Great Aloha Run twice and a marathon last June I think it was. Maybe 4 or 5 runs besides when my most wonderful wife made me. That has to change now, or I will end up over 400 lbs and dead at 50. So here is today’s run, my 5th run since the Great Aloha Run where Märia so easily ground me into dust, and here is a link to my weight loss tracking file that I have kept faithfully for a whole 8 days now.

When I was younger and had significantly less responsibilities I use to read 2-5 books a week. Now I read about 1 book a week for pleasure. That’s about the most I can fit in with 2 not-quite-potty-trained preschoolers, a full time job, a house that needs cleaned, food that needs cooked, laundry that needs washed, and a husband that would like to see me every now and then. Unfortunately, I have this problem see. Every time I see a book store I walk in and buy at least 2 books, more likely 3 or 4 though, thinking I still read like I use to. I end up with mounds of books just sitting there waiting to be read. A couple of days ago we were in Borders and I had 4 books in my hand that I really, really wanted to read, but ended up setting down because all of a sudden I had a child with poopy underwear and no wipes or diapers of any sort, so we ended up going home in a hurry. I got home and was all sad that I didn’t purchase them and then looked around and was like, well I have no shortage of supply of books right now.

Some of the books in my house waiting to be read by me (see serious problem, especially when factoring the fact that the 4 of us live in only 800 sq ft… maybe I should get a Kindle) (no not really, Steven, don’t buy me one, that was a joke, I hate reading off screens):

BTW, the book I’m reading now just in case you were wondering:

And I do read a lot of other non-chick lit stuff, but usually those are the ones that don’t get set on the shelves for another day.

Oh and also BTW, I love writing extremely long run on titles just for the fun of it.

Oh and this counts as posting again. Plus there was even pictures…kinda.

Also, more importantly, I created NormanRushing.com. Head over there right now and buy his book. Norm is my wonderful grandfather who taught me all I know of morality. He is my hero and the one I would most like to emulate on this earth. He wrote a book, more a compilations of stories of people he has known over the years, called “Stories of an Old Country Preacher”. I edited it (poorly) and had someone design the cover and inside illustrations and it is all ready for ordering.

Grandpa will never sell millions of books in Borders and such, but it would totally make his day if he sold a hundred, and made his 4$ commission on each one. =) So make a wonderful old man’s day, order his book full of inspirational stories over at NormanRushing.com =)

Saturday I was given the opportunity to add another thing to my list of ‘things never to do again’

I’d like to say this goes right above ‘Peeing on an electrical fence’

Since we got the girls our lives have been running at full speed. Sarah wakes up in the morning and gets the girls ready and takes them to school. I get up and goto school, goto work, go home and do homework, Sarah gets off work and picks up the girls and comes home. I do ‘distract the kids’ while Sarah cooks, Sarah cooks, and I do bath and bedtime. Sarah and I get about an hour of exhausted talk about how we are going to join a kool-aid drinking cult… and wondering how the human race has continued on without killing off their offspring… and then Sarah goes to bed and I get back on doing homework. I finish up about midnight to 1 AM and then goto bed to do it all over again. I don’t say this for you pity, but merely for you to understand that life is VERY busy for us, and neither of us really ever get a break.

Friday night I suggested to Sarah that she could go have some girl time and hang out with a friend, and I would watch their kids and our kids until they got back. Sarah kind of laughed and told me that it wouldn’t be fair, but thanked me for the offer. I could tell she wanted to, so I texted her friend and arranged the whole thing. The next morning, I told sarah about an hour before her friend was to arrive that I would be watching the kids and Sarah could goto town and do whatever she wanted. She hugged me and I was hero of the morning . (I always like being the hero). She gets dressed and her friend drops off their 3 boys. So let me do some math for you:

4 boys: (26, 4, 3, and 2)

2 girls: (2, and 1)

About two hours into this experience I was like.. who is the responsible adult here?!! Who is running this show! and I realized… that it was supposed to be me.

I realize now that I desperately need a 4 year old. Her oldest was amazingly helpful. I would tell him to watch the baby for me while I went to the restroom.. and he seriously gave me updates every 5 seconds about what that baby was doing. “She getting up… she’s putting something in her mouth”… “Okay I took it away from her”..

Another funny thing was that our 1 year old would follow at her pace behind the other 4. So all 4 would go running down the hall and then the baby would crawl after them. ABout the time that the baby got to where they were… the rest of them came running by her in the opposite direction. Did she cry? Nope.. She just looked up at me with those brown, knowing eyes and said “Slow and steady wins the race…” Or it could have been: “Hey, Taxi, what’s wrong with you… pick me up and follow those kids!” I always get those two confused…

So after 3 hours I decided we needed a snack.. and a little nap.. So when I woke up an hour later the kids were still running around and the house was on fire! Just kidding . So I gave them all PB & J and laid them down in each room. One was in my bed, Our oldest was in her bed, The baby was asleep in the computer room, and the middle child of their family was in the bed in the computer room, and their youngest was on the couch in the living room. I walked into the kitchen and waited for all the screaming to stop… I gave a big sigh of relief and decided to go have some me time.. until I realized that EVERY room in the house had a kid in it.. and there was nowhere I could go. *sigh*

I broke out my new blue tooth and called some friends.. walked around the kitchen and stepped outside for some fresh air. I changed about 5 diapers.. which is much better than 20… and when the womenfolk got home.. I pretended it was the easiest thing I’d ever done..

I was able to come out of it with my sanity in tact, but I was probably about an hour away from becoming a super villain!

Phew! close call.. I’d probably look horrible in a helmet with big antlers!
