“Women, if you find socks on your bedroom floor or a fork in the cushions of the couch, you aren’t divorced and your husband isn’t dead. Men, if your wife tells you to replace the toilet paper when you use the last sheet or put the clothes away after folding them, your children have a Mom and she hasn’t left you.” Dr. Laura Schlessinger
OK, so I don’t use the word evil lightly. I pretty much save that word for cultists, communists and clowns. But I came across pure evil today. Let me start off with a quick analogy.
Imagine you want to buy a toy. You go to Walmart.com, Tartget.com and Amazon.com to compare prices. You determine that Amazon.com has the best price, and start to buy it. But NO, you can’t because Walmart.com has just purchased the sole right to sell that toy to you, and they bumped the price up 400%. That is simply evil.
So what actually happened was that my mom wants me to set up a website for her. I start shopping around for the cheapest price, and one of the places I checked the domain name at reserved the domain name for themselves. They bought the domain name out from under me, based on a search I performed on their site!
So I called their customer service and threatened legal action based on the concept of domain squatting. They promptly told me that it wasn’t that big of a deal, and they were performing a “service” to me by “saving” the domain just for me, so that someone else didn’t come along and buy it and try to sell it to me for an exorbitant amount of money. It was worth $10 and they were trying to sell it to me for $50. What does that sound like to you?
Anyways, I finally talked them into canceling their purchase of the domain, and got it through my own hoster for $10.
So Jason posted a bunch of links to online time wasters, and I was at work and in need of a time waster, so I tried some of his out. I found that most of his comics were quite fun and funny, but required quite a bit of dedication just to get caught up. As an example, one of my favourites was Giant in the Playground. I read and read and read, and got all the way up to like comic 40 something. Just on a lark I thought I would see how much farther I had to go until I was “caught up”. I had a long ways to go. The current comic is comic #533. Whow. That would just take a long time.
But if you have a moment, it is a funny comic. =) Thanks Jason!
Yeah, so you guys have heard that Märia and I ran the Great Aloha Run. This was my second year to run it and it was just as nice this year! More so even, because I ran it with my wonderful wife. Märia really did great! I was really impressed. She ran the first 2.5 straight, and we probably ended up running (jogging) 5.5 of the 8 miles. And she had no previous running experience! WooHoo to her.
So this post is entitled “Blast from the Past”. Here are some pictures from the run, and last years pictures of me running!
And last year’s Great Aloha Run post.
I am watching more than I should. I have time to at work.
American Gladiators – This is the best show on television today. If you think this an insult to this or the other shows on TV, you are wrong. It takes the best of the original show, cuts the 80’s and early 90’s cheese, and adds just the right amount of Hulk and zing. I love this show.
Friday Night Lights – Small town Texas football with all the high school, sports, and family politics in tact. The show manages to show REAL people in all their facets. I love that it shows REAL christians without ever making them pious or hypocrites. This show is real.
Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles – The terminators were some of the best movies ever made (at least the first two). This prequel series is worthy of them. I just keep expecting them to kill off Summer Glau’s Terminator character. She steels every scene she is in.
Jericho – If you missed this last year, you missed a great show. In the first episode you see Denver destroyed by a nuclear explosion. And then it gets interesting. I am proud to say that I sent CBS nuts to uncancel this show. Several tons of nuts later, sent by fans all over the world, they got the message and brought the show back.
Lost – This is a show that you can’t let go of. The plot is ridiculous and the flash forwards aren’t much better. But I have invested too much over the last 3 seasons in the characters to let it go. I just hope they end it and wrap up all the loose ends this year.
Prison Break – I swore off this show at the end of Season 2. They had the perfect ending. It was going to end well, all the way up to the last minute of the season. And then they went and ruined it by letting him get caught again, and put in an even worse prison. But season 3 has proven a good show. Not good enough to make me glad that it exists; I still say they should have all gotten away at the end of season 2, but it is good enough to keep me hooked in. I just wish decisions were made based on what was best for the story, rather than what makes the most money.
The Moment of Truth – Stupidest show on television today. I saw 15 minutes or so. All I have to say is if you are part of the audience keeping this filth on television, go shoot yourself.
Yeah, there are a few other shows I wish I had time for, but this is all I see. Tell me what you are watching in the comments!
Talk about fun. =) I worked a good portion of the day on and off on the site I talked about in my previous post. Some of it was fun, and some tedious. But the best part… sending the bill. Woo Hoo!
It is amazing the difference in throwing up a webpage for a friend, or helping a friend out when they are stumped with a web development problem, and being paid to do web development work. I have been helping my good friend Spencer and his father for years on their business website. They sell convenience store signs and do quite well. Spencer actually runs the site, but every once in a while he would ask me to fix something or figure something out that had him stumped. No problem. I like doing that sort of thing. Give me a programming problem and I will fix it. And if I couldn’t, or just flaked out, no problem. They were grateful for all the help I had done in the past and wouldn’t think twice about asking me to help in the future.
Well, that all changed today. For the last month or so I have been working with Spence to build RokitFuel.com, their new hot cereal business website. We (Märia and I) have all 4 flavors now, and have tried 2 and really like them. Seporah especially likes them, and we like that. Super healthy and super good. Ok, enough for the commercial break. =) But yeah, for the last month they have been asking me to let them compensate me for my work on RokitFuel and I have kinda let it go each time saying they could pay me when the business is making some money and so forth.
But their actual main business needed a website makeover THIS weekend. Yeah, it has to be done by Monday, and Spence’s dad didn’t realize that Spence would be in the field and unable to do it. So he asked me to do it and insisted that I receive compensation. I agreed and we settled on everything.
And now working on the site is totally different. It isn’t play and problem solving and so forth. It just feels like work. Of course, I don’t think I have ever had a deadline or anything, so maybe it is just that… What I do know is I should be working on it and not over here blogging about it. =)
Yeah, I am weird. Back to work I guess… Sorry for the not so funny post.
Ok, so we lost just about everything again. Yeah, I know it is annoying. It annoys me. I have spent the last several days getting this thing working again. Ugh.
So it was a bad harddrive complicated by some software incompatibilities caused by a mouse driver. Yeah, you heard that right. It was pretty much caused by a mouse driver. Talk about issues.
A lot has happened since we went offline, but I will let Märia fill you in on most of it.
But this is mostly a test. Hopefully the pictures and everything will work without much work on my part. These are pictures of the last time we went to the zoo.
