So Steven Says This Is Strictly Either a Mormon or a Crazy Thing (You Can Decide Which I Am)
(I was going to title this “I Don’t Mean to Sound All Doom and Gloom”, but well Steven convinced me otherwise)
Since we’ve lived on this island there’s been a 6.7 magnitude earthquake, island wide blackouts at least 4 times, flash flooding that has been bad enough to cause sewage to dump into the ocean (yuck), and I’m sure something else I’m forgetting. And then the whole earthquake in Haiti with all the news coverage goes and scares the snot out of me. Yes, I realize there are HUGE differences between Hawaii and Haiti, but the fact that we’re both stranded in the middle of the ocean is good enough for me. Because seriously the thought of watching my girls dying from dehydration or starvation and not being able to do anything about it scares me more than anything else I could possibly imagine. So we decided to make our own 72 hour emergency kits. There’s one adult bag in the car, 2 adult bags in the house and 2 toddler size bags in the house as well. I would never have thought of making ones for the girls, but then I read that children as young as 18 months are capable of having their own bag. I was actually really proud of the toddler size ones. They’re only 7 pounds each and they hold a whole lot of junk (compared to our backpacks that are about 50 pounds and hold even more junk). I took pictures of how much stuff I could put in them. The picture with the red backpack is for size comparison.
toddler size backpack
tissues
sunscreen
hand sanitizer
shirt
2 pull ups
wet one wipes
diaper wipes
wisp toothbrushes
small first aid kit
quarters
paper
jumbo crayons
travel size break the ice (or cootie) game
2 glowsticks
finger puppet
whistle
mini frisbee
search and find beanbag
an MRE
3 capri suns
2 4oz emergency waters
PEZ dispenser with PEZ candy
3 fruit snacks
2 skittles
4 honey sticks
That’s each bag. Whew. BTW, Steven and my bag are no where near as fun as the girls, just in case you were wondering. Hopefully we’ll never have the “opportunity” to use them, but in case we do they’re there.

That’s a whole lot of love and preparation packed into seven pounds! Good for you.
Do you remember making them for FHE when you were little?
One hint we found out the hard way is to put all the yummy stuff and fun stuff at the bottom, with the clotes and care items on the top. That made you all less likely to raid your bags.
It’s also a good idea to update about once each year.
Love you!

Mormon? Crazy? I go with Mormon and thank God we are encouraged to be prepared. That way when bad things happen, we are prepared to help all of those who ate, drank, and were merry until the end. Remember living a Christ-like life is not necessarily an easy thing to do in the world but the pay offs are eternal. Life is good…
Love, Dad
